SLS Chapter 8

After the two tasks were completed, the voice of the system also sounded, “System A236 congratulates the host. All the daily tasks were completed successfully. The rewards have been distributed to the portable space. The System kindly requests the host to check.”

“Hmm.” Shi Lingxi didn’t pay attention to the system. He was still immersed in the lingering warmth left on his head by Lou Yuan’s touch. It seemed like countless flowers were blooming in his mind. His gratitude towards Lou Yuan flowed like an endless river.

He had not figured out how to complete the “touch the head” task but Lou Yuan did it on his own, which made Shi Lingxi pile up all the credit for completion on Lou Yuan. Without hesitation, he once again sent Lou Yuan a good person card from his stock.

“You are a good man!” Shi Lingxi expressed firmly with bright eyes blooming with joy.

Lou Yuan, who couldn’t comprehend Shi Lingxi’s strange brain circuit, didn’t refute. He reluctantly withdrew his hand and put the folded map into his pocket. He looked at Shi Lingxi and regained his serious temperament. 

He said, “The key to using your powers lies in your mental strength. Your mental strength is ok, but you haven’t fully adapted to it. The main reason is that you still have some resistance in your heart towards your powers. You ought to remember that in the future these powers will become your biggest asset.”

Shi Lingxi unconsciously always gets scared by his tail. Although it seemed funny, things shouldn’t be like that. 

“Come with me,” Lou Yuan walked out of the room and Shi Lingxi quickly followed him. When they reached the test room, Lou Yuan pointed at the testing device and said, “Attack it with your tail.”

Shi Lingxi nodded and handed Lou Yuan his backpack. He took off his cloak and his furry tail was exposed. It seemed more lively than yesterday, as Shi Lingxi was full of energy now. 

He took a step forward, slightly leaned sideways, swung his tail from left to right, then quickly shot towards the sensor panel of the instrument. 

Shi Lingxi didn’t use much force but the test result was amazing! 213kg! His hit reached the E4 level. A trace of approval flashed through Lou Yuan’s eyes and disappeared quickly. He analyzed for Shi Lingxi, “There is still room for improvement. You should consciously control the power in your tail.”

Although the tail is a manifestation of Shi Lingxi’s power, the effect would be better if integrated with the power in his body. However Shi Lingxi’s power level is too low, there isn’t much power he can mobilize.

“Your power depends on your mental strength. Try to feel it and control it. They are not different from your hands and legs.”

Shi Lingxi remained silent for a long time. He seemed to be trying to feel his powers. He tilted his head and flung his tail sharply. The speed of his blow increased, one could only see a virtual shadow flashing by and the data on the screen changed.

“307 kg!!!” Cheng Mu, the military doctor, screamed from the door and stared at Shi Lingxi. He just wanted to take a look after hearing that Lou Yuan had brought people to the test room, but didn’t expect to be surprised by Shi Lingxi.

“You turned out to be a beast system ability.” Cheng Mu exclaimed before saluting Lou Yuan. That day Shi Lingxi fainted during the test and everything was concluded. So he never expected that Shi Lingxi would turn out to be a beast system instead of the olfactory system. 

There were many uncertain factors when it came to beast type abilities, so they cannot be directly evaluated. Shi Lingxi’s tail possessed such a strong attack power, so the level should be B or higher.

Shi Lingxi’s body weakened. He stepped back to Lou Yuan’s side and glanced at Cheng Mu.

“Consider today as your first day of practice. You can go back and rest.”  Lou Yuan took Shi Lingxi out of the test room. 

Cheng Mu touched his nose and sent them out, he didn’t say anything and watched them leave. Lou Yuan’s behavior towards Shi Lingxi was really different. Did they have any connections that the subordinates didn’t know of? Lou Yuan is also a native of Beicheng, perhaps they knew each other before the apocalypse? 

While Cheng Mu was lost in his thoughts, Lou Yuan had sent Shi Lingxi back to his room.

“To increase your ability there aren’t many shortcuts. You should practice hard, then have a good rest.” Lou Yuan left Shi Lingxi and turned towards the stairs.

Shi Lingxi returned to his room and looked at his tail through brand new eyes. He felt unbelievable for some time. Three hundred Kilograms equalled six hundred jin, which is enough to kill a low-level power. 

Thinking of something, he took out his notebook and recorded Lou Yuan’s acts of kindness towards him. 

“On May 9, 2037, Lou Yuan gave me meat sausage and mutant rabbit meat.  He also taught me how to use powers. He is the person who has treated me the best during the apocalypse.”

In fact, he didn’t need to record it. With his memory, he will never forget these details. But Shi Lingxi wanted to record it and think back on it someday. 

After writing this down, Shi Lingxi felt troubled again. The daily tasks have been completed but the main task didn’t progress a bit. One day of the three-day deadline was almost over.

Shi Lingxi caressed the palm of his hand and saw that the three candies he received from the system were placed in his portable space. Although he felt the reward didn’t match up to the efforts he made, they would add up to a lot. These three pieces should be treasured for the future. 

“Forget it, I’ll worry about stuff tomorrow.” Shi Lingxi thought while he subconsciously kneaded his tail. He curled up in his bed hugging the furry tail.

After he fell asleep, the meat he ate was consumed at a faster rate compared to when he was awake. It was then slowly converted into energy to make up for the deficiencies over the years. 

Lou Yuan didn’t go to sleep as fast as Shi Lingxi. After sending Shi Lingxi back to his room, he met with Xiong Kun. The investigation about Shi Lingxi’s matters in the town was almost done.

“Xiao Xi arrived in a mixed team of abilities and ordinary people. They should’ve reached Beicheng today. The ability users should have joined various power teams while ordinary people should be in the isolation area.” Xiong Kun introduced the situation of Shi Lingxi’s former companions. He scratched his head and continued, “According to the survivors when they were ambushed by a large group of zombies, some of their teammates were separated. Shi Lingxi was among those separated people.” 

Lou Yuan didn’t say anything after hearing this, but he probably should have guessed what happened to Shi Lingxi. Those greedy people must have wanted to swallow the mutant plants alone so they targeted Shi Lingxi. But they must have never expected that Shi Lingxi was alive and also gained abilities. However, Shi Lingxi never told Lou Yuan and the others anything about these matters ,so he must have wanted to avenge himself. Therefore, Lou Yuan decided not to interfere. 

“You and Lang respectively lead two teams and bring these mutant plants back.” Lou Yuan handed over the maps drawn by Shi Lingxi to Xiong Kun. After giving orders, he left Xiong Kun’s room and slowly walked back to his residence. 

Early the next morning, right after Shi Lingxi freshened up, he went straight to the stairway next to Lou Yuan’s room and squatted down. When Lou Yuan came down, Shi Lingxi immediately stood up and greeted Lou Yuan with a genuine smile on his face. 

Lou Yuan was almost shaken but he continued to stride forward “Let’s go and have breakfast.”

“OK.” Shi Lingxi replied. He walked by Lou yuan’s side and asked some questions related to abilities. In this way, the progress of tasks jumped up. After facing Lou Yuan, Shi Lingxi’s ability to approach people and have conversations have steadily increased. 

Their breakfast was mutant beast meat, but it was roasted today.

“Eat as much as you can.” Lou Yuan ordered fearing Shi Lingxi would restrain himself and would not eat enough. He brought Shi Lingxi directly to the kitchen. In addition, Shi Lingxi’s food expenses were taken from his personal account.

Shi Lingxi nodded slightly and did not refuse Lou Yuan’s kindness. He let go of his belly and almost ate the whole hind leg of a mutant pig. After feeling that he couldn’t eat anymore, he went to the sink to wash his hands. 

By the time they arrived at the small square, except for a few patrolling soldiers, everyone else had already set out. Shi Lingxi glanced at Lou yuan and asked softly, “Are we going out today?”

“Well,” Lou Yuan replied and walked out of the camp. Shi Lingxi quickly kept up. Today, only he and Lou yuan were on the same team. Shi Lingxi’s eyes suddenly brightened and he couldn’t keep the smile out of his face.

He and Lou Yuan were one team, which meant that they would have more opportunities to talk. He didn’t have to wait for other people to finish talking with Lou Yuan and wait for his turn as he did yesterday.

Lou yuan glanced down at Shi Lingxi’s smile and felt sad. After today, Shi Lingxi probably wouldn’t have the courage to smile and talk with him. 

During the last two years, it is true that many people wanted to join his team, but after they experienced his special training once, they were no longer willing to continue.

Lou Yuan began to train Shi Lingxi as he had done in the past, tried hard to squeeze his potential and physical strength, so that he could feel the oppression of death and cope under pressure.

Several times, the zombie’s bloody teeth almost pierced through Shi Lingxi’s neck. The sharp fangs, the smell of rotten flesh, Lou Yuan’s indifference, if the person’s mind was slightly weaker, they would undoubtedly breakdown during the process. 

Lou Yuan had trained a lot of people in the same way. Except for a few, almost all of them burst into tears on the spot. For a long time, whenever the very few who didn’t cry saw him, they couldn’t walk properly because of fear.

And Shi Lingxi… He was not the most qualified person among those who were trained by Lou Yuan. His face was scared and pale, yet Shi Lingxi always had the spirit to talk to him, giving him the illusion that Shi Lingxi hadn’t been abused enough. 

“Your tail has reached E6 attack level, it is more than enough to deal with it. Shi Lingxi! Do you want to be a member of the team? If you can’t overcome your fears, you won’t have a place in my team.” Lou Yuan’s words were very harsh, but he purposefully stressed it more fiercely. “Once you let me interfere in the battle, you will be totally disqualified from entering my team…” 

Having said that, Lou Yuan was clear in his heart that Shi Lingxi was more suited to be a researcher in the scientific base. He gave Shi Lingxi special training, taking into consideration the situation where Shi Lingxi was almost assassinated. 

Shi Lingxi held the dagger firmly, the shivers in his body subsided slowly. He tilted his head and stared at Lou Yuan with a stubborn gaze “If I kill it, can I enter your team?”

Lou Yuan chose this E6 – close to E7 zombie, to unilaterally abuse Shi Lingxi. He just wanted to fully stimulate Shi Lingxi’s potential and expose his shortcomings. But when it came to killing it… Even though Shi Lingxi’s sudden attack power was high, other aspects could not keep up. So killing it should be considered almost impossible.  

But the stubbornness he saw in Shi Lingxi’s eyes made him acquiesce, “Yes if you’re able to kill this zombie, you’re welcome to join my team at any time.”

Lol the ending was very anime. Other people impress lovers with flowers and sweet talk while poor Xiaoxi has to kill zombies. Anyhow the warm up phase is coming to an end and the Beicheng arc will start soon.
